I'm not much of a mecha fan. I've been curious as to how many decent Mecha Anime there are out there. Prerequisites: NOT Gundam. NOT any that have Mechs in Space - the last thing I want to be thinking in a anime is "Okay, you've attached rockets to the back and to the feet of your robot. You can simulate how effective that would be by attaching air jets to the back and the feet of your space suit and the result would be 'not very'.". Basically, although I like Sci-fi I prefer it when the things seen in sci-fi are in some way grounded in actual physics. Mecha Anime I've seen and liked: Neon Genesis Evangelion (good story and awesome use of religious metaphors) Jinki: Extend Zoids: Chaotic Century (love the use of giant robot animals - my favourite would have to be the RevRaptors) Zoids: New Century Zero Note: Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann does not interest me. If and only if (lol Maths pun) someone can give me a good reason to watch it will I watch it (good luck .

Full Metal Panic! is, in fact, a mecha series. A very good mecha series. We're already watching Fumoffu, so go ahead and get some background on the characters.
If you have no problem with mecha surfing in the sky, then give Eureka Seven a shot too.
Honestly, I think you're sabotaging yourself here. You seem only interested in what's called "real robot" shows, but you're dismissing Gundam - one of the most important real robot shows! Please give it a chance.
Also, Gurren Lagann is worth watching for hot blood, courage, and manly spirit. Kick reason to the curb, and watch Gurren Lagann!

I must make an amendment to my above post - after looking through pictures on Deviant art, I can safely say that the ShadowFox and GenoSaurer are my favourite Zoid mechs, not the RevRaptor (but I still like the RevRaptor a lot). I've seen the title "Eureka Seven" appear up a lot, so I might as well give it a look (one thing though: define what you mean by "surfing in the sky"). I could go on and on as to reasons why I don't really care about Gundam - but I'll give you the main one; it features Mecha in Space, which is pointless. One of the reasons why using mecha in space is pointless is because if they're zooming around in space they most certainly do not need legs. The fact that Gundam mechs have legs is a pointless waste of resources (they're not made of thin air) and manpower (manufacturing them in the first place) - it'd be better to give them additional arms. Thank you . Nice try with the Gurren Lagann statement you gave, but I could say the same thing about any of the shonen anime that I watch and it wouldn't make anyone more interested in watching . *is currently depressed 'cos he learnt a few minutes ago that there is a Zoids battle game for gamecude, but he can't find a European copy of it anywhere on the 'net * EDIT: *is happy again because he just saw some videos of the game on IGN and it's a pile of crap *

By surfing in the sky, I mean surfing on surfboards, in the sky. On sky-surf. It has a sweet soundtrack too, and some cool characters.
I know man, I know. I remember you griping about the grappler arms in Outlaw Star being used to HOLD GUNS AND AXES FUCK YEAH! But c'mon! Suspend disbelief! It's totally awesome! Also riddle me this; how would a several armed space monstrosity manage land combat as well?
Now now, you're clearly misunderstanding. You can say that stuff about the average shounen, sure why not, One Piece has some major hot-blood, so does Busou Renkin, Black Cat, so on and so forth. Gurren Lagann is on another level entirely, however. Just watch it, it's genuinely one of the best shows in the last... Well, best shows ever

Well, best shows ever Eureka Seven sounds awesomesauce. *flag raised* (that's a reference to dating sims BTW) Also riddle me this; how would a several armed space monstrosity manage land combat as well? It wouldn't - that's where you'd deploy your mechs/tanks. If you take a good, long look at my list of "Mecha Anime I've seen and liked" you'll see that all of them had mecha combat firmly rooted on the planetary surface - the only place that mechs are suited for IMHO (unless they're of the flying variety of Zoids - namely terasaur/bird-shapes). I get the feeling that I should've never mentioned Gurren Lagann in the first place, but if it satiates you I'll watch it...once I've finished my exams...and the other 10 animes on my list before it. Said animes are (no particular order): FMA Brotherhood Kanon (2006 series) K-On! Queen's Blade series 2 (bottom priority) Persona Trinity Soul Zoids: Fusors (Yay! Third series!) Zoids: Genesis (Yay! Fourth series!) F-Zero: Falcon Densetsu (so hard to find English subs that it might as well be bottom priority) FMP Eureka Seven EDIT: You may think the fact that I called Eureka Seven "awesomesauce" when it's clearly not routed in physics is a hypocrisy on my part, but what I failed to mention earlier is that I love anything with a unique premise. The idea of giant robots surfing the sky is too much of a unique premise to pass up.

RahXephon. Although it might seem like a NGE rip off it has it's heart firmly set in old fairy tales and it is fucking fantastic.
Basquash. Mechs playing Basketball. That's pretty fucking unique.
Patlabor. A brilliant series with two fantastic movies. The third film was a bit of a wash out though.
Code Geass. It goes a bit batshit crazy but it's fucking awesome.
Robotech/Macross. The second longest running mecha series.
Although you don't seem like the the premise of Gundam due to the arguement that you don't need legs in space...Bi-pedal machines are meant to be all purpose because they are like us humans in form. I was also going to recommend Vandred and Nadesico which are also fantastic series but since they also feature mechs in space I guess thats out of the question.
For a Gundam series which doesn't go to space try watching 08th MS Team.

Whoa 0_0 too many.
Code Geass is a no. I've got the fourth manga book and I haven't even bothered to read that yet, so the anime is certainly a no. Nightmare of Nunnally is good (if a little short), though.
"Bi-pedal machines are meant to be all purpose because they are like us humans in form." Yes and humans have never had a problem with swimming/flying unaided. Furthermore, the evolution to become bipedal was to facilitate the use of tools, not to facilitate movement capabilities - as a matter of fact our closest living relatives, namely Chimpanzees, Gorillas and Orangutans, use four limbs to move around and are far more agile than we are.

I'd still say watch Code Geass because those manga's aren't related to the original story. They're re-writes to try and ring more money out of the franchise.

I'd side with Shenny on the recommendation of Basquash! Nice mix of Sporting anime with Mecha and it's hilariously funny in places. (Sad thing is that if it ever gets licensed I can see 4kids tearing it a new ones...)

Thats cool I wanna start collecting the model kits. I wanna get a master grade Wing Zero custom and put it on top of the tree at Christmas instead of an Angel.

I'm pretty big into Gundam. Got a modest collection of Gunpla at home, which will most definitely grow a little over Summer. MG Turn A at the centre of it all, what a design!

Aside from the current conversation being a little off-topic, I have to mention that doing such a thing might be a little foolish. Mostly because model kits tend to be quite expensive and if you put one on top of the tree there is a chance that it might fall. Two words that I think would follow would be: "Oh sh*t!"

Well you'd fix it on properly then wouldn't you. I know guys who often have Gundams on the top of their trees and not one's fallen off yet.
