Discussion thread about the anime/manga awesomeness that is Hayate no Gotoku / Hayate the Combat Butler.
If you've never seen/read Hayate then go read/watch it now.
The name of the series is about as absurd as the series itself.
16-year-old Hayate Ayasaki lives to work to put food on the table before his parents gamble away all of their money again. This is how he has lived his life - working because his parents don't want to.
However, one Christmas eve Hayate returns home to find a strange envelope addressed to him on the table. At first glance the envelope appears to be a Christmas present from his parents. However, upon opening the envelope he finds a letter stating that his parents had split the scene and sold Hayate's organs to the yakuza to pay off their 150million yen gambling debt (somewhere in the region of 1-2 million pounds).
The yakuza are soon there to collect their payment and Hayate quickly bolts it. He eventually finds himself in a park and finally decides for himself that being a good guy isn't worth it - that the only way to get anywhere in life is to be a bad guy. He soon spots a girl standing next to some vending machines and decides that he will kidnap her and hold her for ransom. Somewhere along the lines, though, his desire to kidnap her is mistaken as a confession of love by the girl in question.
The short story of what happens next is that poor Hayate-kun screws up his kidnap attempt, ends up saving the girl from real kidnappers and ends up as her butler. (Did I forget to mention that the girl is Nagi Sanzenin, the one-and-only heir to the Sanzenin family's estate? Basically, she's uber-uber-uber-uber-uber-uber wealthy.)
This anime/manga is a ton-of-fun and I defy anyone who has seen/read it and not enjoyed it.
